I have lived in 4 countries in Europe. Every country’s inhabitants have different income levels. The middle class of each country has a different salary bracket and purchase power is different. While some countries could afford a lot more and traveling to other countries is cheaper than the poorest country i have lived in.
Yet, the wealthiest country stated the same problems as the poorest. They don’t have enough, life is expensive, all products and services get more and more expensive, etc.
Most inhabitants of the 4 countries make similar statements. The buying power is also different per country. What makes that inhabitants in all 4 countries think that they don’t have enough or are poor?
They believe that they don’t have enough. The keyword here is belief. Every person believes statements related to money, housing, health, relationships, etc.
What are Money Beliefs
Money beliefs are statements around a topic that holds true for one person, but not necessarily for others. While many have similar beliefs, which you have and why is unique for every individual. A belief is a definition you have taken from others or gained through experience.
Examples of Money beliefs could be:
Money is root of all evil
I can’t afford that
One must work hard to earn money
I am not good with money
Money causes trouble
These are a few of a long list of negative beliefs people hold around money. While many people hold negative or rather limiting beliefs around money, you can also have positive money beliefs:
Money is a bliss
I love money
Having lots of money makes life easy
Again, there are plenty of positive money beliefs you can hold.
Where do money beliefs come from?
All beliefs, including the ones related to money, are formed by taking them over from parents, family, friends and society.
As a child you don’t have the concept of money or how much things cost. You just run into a toy store and ask your parents for this car or that doll. Very likely they have said more then once: “We don’t have money for that.”
While it might be an innocent statement for parents to make, it might have an profound impact on children, you. When you hear this multiple times, you adopt this statement and subconsciously think that there isn’t enough money to buy what you want.
The Scarcity Mind-Set
Another way of gaining beliefs is through experience. A typical occurrence for children is how adults collect things. Commonly, parents explain that an object is worth a lot of money because there aren’t a lot of the same items in circulation automatically, children connect scarcity to be desired.
In later years, teenagers and adults get teached a similar principle in the economy. There is a finite supply of money and those who have a lot will reap the benefits. Those benefits are traveling, dining out, big houses, luxury items and more. Again scarcity is projected on you.
these examples train your brain to adopt the scarcity mindset. You think that there isn’t enough for everyone to go around.
While this seems true for a lot of things, it isn’t. Society created an artificial scarcity to keep you spending your money.
Inflation is not natural. Money is literally added to the circulation to make money worth less. Thus you purchase items before it costs more to buy the same item.
Production decisions limits the number items available for consumption. Some manufacturers create limited edition products, like sneakers, to make you buy an extra pair you don’t need.
With the scarcity mindset comes jealousy, envy and greed. We think that life is a zero-sum game. When others have something, they deprive you from having it too.
How the scarcity mindset impacts your life
When you think that there isn’t enough for everyone, you are in a constant fight with others to get what you need to live your life. You might not realize it, but it is tiring.
You are experiencing stress all day long to get the resources you need. Because your body spends much of the daily energy worrying about this lack of resources, you are left without much energy for anything else.
You don’t want to build and maintain relationships, engage in social activities, or participate in hobbies. The very things that give you joy in life is what you hold off to for a resource fight.
Changing your mindset and beliefs will provide you a more joyful life.
How Money Beliefs impact your life
You are a creator in life even when it doesn’t feel like that. You create your reality based on your beliefs, which live in your subconscious. When you believe that you don’t have enough money to buy a new phone, your reality makes sure you won’t be able to. See how limiting a negative belief is.
Quantum mechanics teaches us that reality is made up energy. Every object has a different frequency which places the atoms in groups.
The opposite experience is true for positive money beliefs. When you belief that earning money is easy for you, you will experience a satisfying salary for easy work.
These 2 examples highlight how different your life can be with the right money beliefs.
How to change your life
Money beliefs have a profound impact on your life and it is likely dragging you down right now. The good news is that you can change your life. Ideally you get rid of the limiting beliefs. If that isn’t possible for you right now, that is alright. You can change them to a positive belief as well.

The first step is to know and acknowledge that you have money beliefs. When you do, you can start examining your life. A great indicator of limiting money beliefs is when you have fears and doubt.
Next time when you feel a fear or doubt coming up around money, saving, expenditures, etc. you ask yourself what you doubt or fear for.
For example, [Example of having a fear of something related to money, notice fear and find the belief]
It happens frequently that you can’t quite put the finger on what causes the fear or doubt. This is okay. By becoming aware when, where and how these feelings come up, you will recognize a pattern. When you do, you can formulate the belief in a sentence.
Usually, people have many money beliefs and they tend to overlap. You might become aware of multiple beliefs triggering in the same situation.
How to change money beliefs?
Since you are reading this, you likely want to change your limiting money beliefs into positive beliefs. Even changing it to a less negative belief has positive impact on your life. You can go step by step or change it completely in one go.
Your belief system is like an onion. When you remove or change a belief, you might still experience fears or doubt around money. You have to work more on the belief(s) and remove them one at the time till you arrive at the core belief. It is the foundational belief where all other similar beliefs are derived from.
There isn’t one method to make changes to your belief system, there are many. Here are a few outlined. Use the one you that resonates with you.
💡
These methods work for all beliefs, not only money beliefs. You can use the methods below to work on whatever limiting belief you want to get rid of.
1. Breaking down by writing
As the saying goes: the pen is mightier than the sword. Writing has a strong therapeutic effect. When you write out your thoughts, you let your hand flow over the paper. In this exercise, you don’t have to think deeply, you go with the flow..
so what do you do?
First write down the money belief you want to change. Then ask yourself the a why question based on the belief.
Then, you write down the first answer to the question that comes up. Followed by a question based on the answer you just gave.
What happens in the process is that you follow your reasoning all the way to a point where you realize that the belief has no merit. When that happens, you understand that it isn’t true for you.
The writing process is very effective when you ask yourself the right questions over and over. You basically debate with yourself, but instead of coming with arguments, you only ask questions.
2. Meditation
You can gather insights and brack down your beliefs through meditation.
You sit straight up in a quiet room and set out the intention on what you want to resolve. Next, you have become in a relaxed state. Easy your mind and let thoughts come into your brain. At some point it will quiet down.
When you don’t think about day to day operations like what to eat this evening and cleaning the house, you naturally start to think about the belief you want to resolve.
Your mind will automatically come with situations what happened around your belief. Don’t interrupt the thoughts. Your mind starts to process.
Let your mind wander from on situation to the other. Maybe so repeated statements come up. After a while the mind gets quiet again. It is done with processing.
Some people can resolve a belief in one session, but needing more meditation sessions on the same belief is normal.
3. Family Constellation
We are connected with everything and everyone, but have a stronger connection with our parents. After all they gave us life. Naturally, we hold them in high regard and learn from them. After that come other family members, then friends and lastly society.
Parents have significant influence on how we see the world around us. When they repeat statements as “money is bad” over and over, children often belief that. Interestingly, brothers and sisters don’t hold the same beliefs. Children choose for themselves what to take over from the parents. This happens for a variety of reasons.
The family constellation method is frequently used to discover why you behave the way you do. The foundation for that behavior is a belief.
The method connections you to the energy of the family and its members. Licensed therapists facilitate and help you going through the process of discovering what happened. You ask questions to your parents or other members.
Since the beliefs or experience are not yours, you give it back to the owner (typically a close family member). It sounds strange to give it back, but by saying it out loud, it resolves the issue.
Family members aren’t physically at the location. So there is no physical confrontation.
4. Inner child sessions
How do you know when you don’t belief it anymore?
Simply put, emotions like fear, are triggered by beliefs around an event. Thus when you don’t experience a negative emotion, you don’t hold the negative belief.
But how long does it take to transform a belief? The time it takes varies per person. Contrary to what many people would assume, it has nothing to do with the difficulty of the belief. All beliefs are equally difficult when you belief it.
The method that resonates most with you will be the fastest. You’re not required to always choose the same method. Depending on the belief you’re working you can choose different methods.
From my experience, breaking down beliefs vary from 1 hour to a few months. When I write down and ask questions, a belief can break down fast. Some beliefs are more prevalent or require going deeper, then breaking down a belief using family constellation will take weeks till months.
